Bremerton’s iconic USS Turner Joy in need of restoration funding

When 2015 comes around, it will be time to tow the Turner Joy over to Lake Union, put it in dry dock and scrape everything off. The last time that was done — in 2001 — 52 tons of sea growth was removed. The problem is, it’s going to cost $1.25 million. And the tiny Bremerton Historic Ship Association only has $40,000 saved up.

Supported by its 38,000 yearly visitors, the Port of Bremerton, the Tin Can Sailors group, and proceeds from local governments’ motel and motel taxes, the nonprofit’s annual budget is only $261,000. Out of that comes expenses for a small staff and the monthly electrical bill that ranges from $1,500 to $2,000.
