HANSVILLE — After undergoing more than $200,000 in upgrades, Point No Point lighthouse officials are now asking for the community to help complete the restoration project. The lighthouse needs to raise $50,000 by June to receive a matching grant from the Birkenfeld Memorial Trust to restore a building called the keeper’s house, one of three registered historic structures part of Point No Point lighthouse.

“It would be a shame to lose that large amount of money because we couldn’t meet the match,” said Jeff Gales, executive director of U.S. Lighthouse Society, the nonprofit agency that overseas the lighthouse. The $100,000 worth of upgrades proposed for the keeper’s house calls for exterior fixes including a new roof, windows and doors, among other details to restore the structure back to its 1930s appearance. So far, $10,000 has been raised for the grant, Gales said.

Finishing the structure would complete a three-phase restoration project that started in 2009. The lighthouse received $70,490 worth of upgrades and a structure called the keeper’s workshop received $104,509 worth of upgrades. The funds came from a mixture of state and private grants.

This is the first time the lighthouse society has asked the public to help with fundraising efforts for the project, Gales said.

“This whole region of the Puget Sound always thrived from the use of water, commerce is still extremely important,” Gales said, adding completing the upgrades preserves an important piece of Kitsap history.

The lighthouse property sits on about 60 acres at the northern tip of the Kitsap Peninsula. The Coast Guard owns the park station while Kitsap County Parks and Recreation Department owns the surrounding land, which includes a park, beach and walking area.

Gales hopes to begin final restoration work in July and have it complete by October.
