May 14 Wounded Warriors Featured at Navy League’s May Luncheon

Keyport, Wash – The May 14 Navy League luncheon will feature an overview of the highly successful Wounded Warrior program at Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) Keyport.

Captain-KohnkeCapt. Dave Kohnke, Commander, NUWC Keyport, will provide a brief overview of the command’s commitment to supporting Wounded Warriors prior to introducing Staff Sgt. Chris Gibson, U.S. Army, and Sgt. Daniel Mullins, U.S. Marine Corps, who will share their personal stories.

Vice Adm. Kevin McCoy, Commander, Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), has referred to the hiring of Wounded Warriors as a “moral imperative”. Leaders and employees of NUWC Keyport agree with this so strongly that they have welcomed nearly 70 Wounded Warriors to their command since 2009.

NUWC Keyport works closely with other commands including the Warrior Transition Battalion at Joint Base Lewis-McChord to match Wounded Warriors to appropriate internships and, ultimately, careers at NUWC Keyport.

One of the keys to the program’s success is recognizing that these men and women need a fulfilling career, not just a job. Many believe their military career ended much too soon and they would like to continue serving their country in another capacity. They relish the opportunity to perform interesting work using the unique skills they have while helping their country and supporting their families.

As a result of the commitment the command has to Wounded Warriors and that Wounded Warriors have to the command, NUWC Keyport consistently exceeds Wounded Warrior hiring goals set by NAVSEA and was recently recognized by the State of Washington’s Governor’s Committee on Disability Issues and Employment with the Governor’s Employer Award in the Federal Employer Category. This came on the heels of Cmdr. Erik Neal, NUWC Keyport’s Chief Staff Officer, being recognized with a national Disability Champion Award for his work with Wounded Warriors.
