Jan 14: Luncheon Speaker Capt Michael Wettlaufer CO USS John C Stennis (CVN 74)

The January Luncheon Speaker is Captain Michael Wettlaufer, Commanding Officer USS John C Stennis (CVN 74).

Capt Michael WettlaugherUSS John C Stennis has been the workhorse of the Navy’s Aircraft Carrier Fleet.  The Stennis made back-to-back deployments to the Middle East. The ship returned March 2, 2012, from a seven month trip and departed on Aug. 27, four months early, for another eight deployment. After a one month stand down, Stennis began an arduous 14 month $240 million shipyard maintenance period, entering drydock in June.

Captain Wettlaufer conducted operational flying tours in the A-6 intruder with VA-85, and in the FA-18 Hornet during two assignments with Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 195, including a tour as commanding officer. These tours included combat deployments embarked aboard USS America (CV 66), USS Independence (CV 62) and USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63). After completing Navy Nuclear Power Training he was assigned as Executive Officer in USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74).  Recently Captain Wettlaufer commanded USS Denver (LPD 9), Home-ported in Sasebo, Japan.  He assumed command of USS John C. Stennis on 26 July 2013. 

Captain Wettlaufer holds a Master of Science in Aviation Systems from the University of Tennessee and a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College. Captain Wettlaufer’s decorations include Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medals, Air Medals (three individual and three strike/flight awards). He has accumulated over 3700 flight hours in 48 aircraft and more than 800 carrier arrested landings.

The January Luncheon will be held at the Olympic Lodge on NBK Bremerton. Since it is at a different location, it is particularly important to register for this luncheon. Doors open at 11:00 and the Program begins at 11:30.

Directions to Olympic Lodge

From Port Orchard:

Take Hwy 16 North.  Hwy 16 merges with Hwy 3 in Gorst.  Continue north, take East Hwy 304/Bremerton exit.  Take Puget Sound Naval Shipyard/Naval Station Bremerton exit.  Go through Charleston Gate on Farragut Avenue and continue through first stop sign at corner of Farragut and Z Street.  For parking at Olympic Lodge continue on Farragut Avenue which turns into Decatur Avenue.  Proceed, turning left on Coghlan Street and left into the Olympic Lodge parking area.

From Silverdale:

Take Hwy 3 South.  Take the Kitsap Way exit turning left onto Kitsap Way.  Kitsap Way becomes 6th Avenue.  Turn right on Naval Avenue, go through Naval Gate.  On base the street becomes Dewey Street.  For parking at Olympic Lodge turn left on Decatur Avenue, left on Coghlan Street and left into the parking lot.

From Bremerton Ferry:

Ferry tunnel places you on Burwell St (use left lane).  Continue on Burwell Street. Approximately 1.5 miles, turn left on Naval Avenue.  Go through the Naval Gate which turns to Dewey Street.  For parking at Olympic Lodge turn left on Decatur Avenue,  left on Coghlan Street, and left into the parking lot.
