July 8: July Luncheon Speaker Capt David K. Kohnke, CO NUWC Keyport

The Navy has instituted new base access requirements that will make the July 8th luncheon problematic for those who do not have base access.  The easiest solution is to arrange to ride in with someone who has base access.  If that does not work for you, call Maria at Bangor Plaza, 360-535-5928 (O) or 360-340-1291 (C)—she has arranged for a couple of her staff to make runs to the gate to escort folks in.  There is some parking available at the main gate entrance. Again, if you can arrange with a NL member who has access to catch a ride with, it will work better for you.  We are researching alternatives for future luncheons, and may move to the Keyport Museum which does not require base access.

This Month’s luncheon Speaker is Captain David K. Kohnke, Commanding Officer Naval Undersea Warfare Center Keyport.

KohnkeCaptain Kohnke will be presenting on  ” Torpedo Town USA ” and the plan for the upcoming Centennial. The Pacific Coast Torpedo Station was formally commissioned on 14 November 1914 with Commander H. N. Jenson, USN, as the Station’s first Commanding Officer.

NUWC Keyport operates and maintains unique national assets in our precision ranges and our technologically  unique maintenance and repair facilities. Established in 1950s, our ranges were the first 3-D underwater tracking ranges in the world. Keyport s National Torpedo Depot is the Navy’s major repair facility for torpedoes and has supported every variation of torpedo that has served the US Navy and many foreign navies.

Captain Kohnke has experienced a wide variety of  assignments in his Naval Career. He Enlisted in the Navy in 1980, trained as a Reactor Operator, and served as an instructor at the Nautilus S1W prototype and onboard USS Bremerton.  After completing a NROTC Scholarship at the University of Arizona he was commissioned in 1990 and qualified in Submarines onboard USS Ohio Blue.

Captain Kohnke converted to the Engineering Duty Officer (EDO)  and graduated from Arizona State University with a Masters degree in Electrical Engineering. From 1997 to 2000, he worked as a Weapons System Engineer for the Submarine Launched Ballistic Missile Program for Strategic Systems Programs (SSP), supporting the development of several versions of fire control software, as well as the TRIDENT Mark 98 Mod 4 Fire Control System. Following a tour as the EDO Detailer, has was selected as an Acquisition Professional.

Captain Kohnke’s first shipyard tour was at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard working as a project superintendent for the USS Houston refueling overhaul. He next served as Officer in Charge of the Acoustic Research Detachment (ARD) in Bayview, Idaho. Capt. Kohnke then reported to Intermediate Maintenance Facility in Bangor, Wash. as the Repair Officer,  followed by a tour as the Combat Systems Officer aboard the USS John C. Stennis. In June 2011, Capt. Kohnke reported to Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility, where he served as Engineering and Planning Officer. He assumed command of NUWC Division, Keyport in Sept. 2012.
