Captain Caren McCurdy grew up in Hood River, Oregon, and graduated from the University of Oregon in 1989. Captain McCurdy her Juris Doctor at the University of Tulsa College of Law in 1993. She later earned a Master of Laws (Environmental and Natural Resources Law) at Lewis and Clark College of Law, Portland, Oregon.
Her assignments at sea include Command Judge Advocate, USS Simon Lake (AS 33) supporting Operation Southern Watch and Staff Judge Advocate for Carrier Strike Group Three, the Carl Vinson Strike Group supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.
Ashore, Captain McCurdy has served as Executive Officer, Region Legal Service Office Southwest, an instructor at Naval Justice School, a detailer at Navy Personnel Command, both trial and defense counsel and environmental counsel for Navy Region Southwest.
In 2009, Captain McCurdy completed a one-year assignment to Combined Security Transition Command – Afghanistan where she led rule of law development assistance within the Afghanistan Ministry of Interior and the Afghan National Police.
In 2010, Captain McCurdy received the American Bar Association’s Outstanding Military Service Career Judge Advocate Award. Captain McCurdy is licensed to practice law in Oregon and Nebraska. Her personal awards include the Legion of Merit, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and the Navy Achievement Medal.

A driver’s license from Washington, Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri and New Mexico can no longer be used as the sole means of identification to gain access to Navy Region Northwest installations.
