Swarner Communications LogoThe Ranger Publishing Company, owned by University of Washington Communications Professor Merritt Benson was founded in January 1951 with the first publishing of the Fort Lewis Ranger newspaper serving then Fort Lewis, Wa.  The company was later sold to Thomas Swarner in 1969.  In 1980, the company operated under the dba Military News Publishers after the company started publishing the NW Airlifter for McChord Air Force Base.   The company sold in 2006 to Swarner’s sons, Ron and Ken Swarner.

In 2013, the company started a partnership with the Defense Department to provide Stars and Stripes to the community, expanding to Kitsap in 2014.  At that time, they wrapped Stars and Stripes with Northwest Military newspaper to provide local coverage as well.

Swarner has sponsored several events over the last year here in Kitsap County supporting military dependents. Frank Portello, Swarner’s Military Manager has volunteered to be on our Board of Directors.
