For the past three months the Bremerton-Olympic Peninsula Council of the Navy League of the United States has been recruiting council members, local civic leaders, naval officers and government STEM specialists to serve as judges for this weekend’s State Science and Engineering Fair held at Bremerton High School. Along with providing volunteer judges the past three years for the fair, the Navy League Council also provides $1200 dollars in scholarship awards for Grades 1-12 participants in the Science and Engineering Fair.
Retired Navy Captains Tom Danaher and Mike Spence are co-chairs for the Navy League but say their main recruiter is a loyal Navy League member in Mrs. Helen Miller. “Helen recruits all year long for Navy League judges and she gathers them from all over. This year we have nearly 30 judges and many are newly recruited by Helen,” said Danaher.
Navy League judges participate in the required pre-fair training, will dawn special Navy League shirts for the fair, and will join the many other volunteers required to judge over 600 fair entries this year.
