Pilly Lent Award

The Bremerton Olympic Peninsula Navy League Council teamed with the Commander, Submarine Force, Pacific Fleet (COMSUBPAC) to honor the best performing tactical submarine department head assigned to COMSUBPAC. The award is named for Willis S. “Pilly” Lent who fired the first torpedos in World War II on 10 Dec 1941 off Wake Island.

The 2017 Winner is LCDR John Wayne Walker, the Navigator on the USS Jimmy Carter (SSN-23). “He lives on the cutting edge of tactical innovation and operational success. Operating in some of the world’s harshest environments, he brings a calculated and thoughtful approach to accomplish all operational tasking with the perfect balance of intensity, focus, and poise.”


The normal practice is to present the award at the Bremerton Armed Forces Festival Gala in April, however USS Jimmy Carter was at sea. He was Presented a set of World War II deep water dolphins at a celebratory dinner in November by Captain Willis A Lent, Pilly’s son. Bremerton Mayor Patty Lent presented the Keys to the City of Bremerton at a second ceremony.  LCDR Walker has orders to ComSubRon 11 in San Diego as the Operations Deputy.
