Mar 13: Luncheon Speaker Will Lent

Our March Luncheon speaker is Will Lent, who will discuss the WW II sinking of the USS Indianapolis (CA-35). This is the second segment in our program to discuss the discovery of the wreck of the USS Indianapolis.

On a secret mission in July 1945, USS Indianapolis (CA-35) delivered the first atomic bomb (Little Boy) to United States Army Air Force Base on Tinian. On its return trip to the Philippines the ship was torpedoed by the Imperial Japanese Navy submarine I-58 and sank in 12 minutes; leading to the greatest single loss of life at sea, from a single ship, in the history of the US Navy. Of 1,196 crewmen aboard, approximately 300 went down with the ship. The remaining 900 faced exposure, dehydration, saltwater poisoning, and shark attacks while floating with few lifeboats and almost no food or water. The Navy learned of the sinking when survivors were spotted four days later by the crew of a PV-1 Ventura on routine patrol. Only 317 survived.

Our third segment in April, David Reams of the Paul Allen expedition will discuss the discovery of the wreckage of the sunken cruiser in the Philippine Sea lying at a depth of approximately 18,000 ft (5,500 m).

Our social hour will begin at 11 am; opening will be at 11:45 followed by lunch. Location is the Bangor Conference Center, Trident Ballroom, NBK, Bangor.
