May 5: Bremerton 26th Annual Culinary Arts Competition

What started off as a Navy Chili Cook Off grew into a full blown Culinary Arts Exposition. It draws contestants from all services throughout the state including teams from Joint Base Lewis McChord JBLM), Naval Base Kitsap(NBK), Naval Base Everett(NSE), Naval Air Station Whidbey Island(NASWI), Naval Hospital Bremerton(NHB), USS Chester Nimitz,  USS Maine, Washington State National Guard, and Olympic College Veterans.

The featured event is a Battling Chefs Competition where teams have to compose a menu, cook and present a meal with each dish incorporating the secret selected ingredients (Lamb, Gala Apple, Quinoa, and Golden Beets). This year’s winner was the Olympic College Veterans.

One of the advantages to the Crews that enter is the feedback given by the professional chef judges on the aspects go the meal and it’s presentation. ” One of the functions of the Garnish is to counter something in the dish, not just decoration on the plate” (Chef Christopher Plemmons, Director of Culinary Arts at Olympic College.

Awards were given for 1st, 2nd and 3rd in each category, as well as medal presented for the first place winner in each class. Judges graded on a one to ten scale. Each dish was presented and then judged on general appearance; presentation and creativity; display of skill; most originality; and taste and texture.
