Welcome Captain Jon Moretty, Commanding Officer NUWC Keyport

Please welcome Captain Jon H. Moretty , the New Commanding Officer of NUWC Keyport. The Change of Command is today at 1030 AM.

Captain Jon H. Moretty, a native of Portland, OR, enlisted in the Navy in 1989.  He was selected for the Nuclear Enlisted Commissioning Program, graduating with honors from Oregon State University in 1994 with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and was commissioned via Officer Candidate School. He holds a Master of Business Administration from San Diego State University and Master of Arts in Strategic Studies and National Security from Naval War College where he was selected as Mahan Scholar and performed Chief of Naval Operations directed research on China’s nuclear program.

Upon completion of nuclear power training and the Submarine Officer Basic Course, he was assigned as a division officer to USS ASHEVILLE (SSN 758) completing one Western Pacific deployment and earning a Battle Efficiency “E”.

After completing his initial submarine tour and reporting to Submarine Training Center, Point Loma in 2002,he served as Engineering Officer on USS PENNSYLVANIA (SSBN 735) (GOLD), completing four strategic deterrent patrols and earning two Battle Efficiency “E”s, the Omaha Trophy and Outstanding Trident Performance award.

In 2005, while stationed at Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor he served as Squadron Engineer, Submarine Squadron NINETEEN, subsequently going on to become the Executive Officer on USS KENTUCKY (SSBN 737) (BLUE), conducing three strategic deterrent patrols, earning a Battle Efficiency “E” and the Omaha Trophy.

Ashore, in 2010 he reported to the Deputy Chief of Staff for Plans, Exercises and Country Engagement on the staff of Submarine Group SEVEN in Yokosuka, Japan and provided emergency response coordination during OPERATION TOMODACHI following the great earthquake, tsunami and resultant nuclear disaster.

He assumed command of USS HENRY M. JACKSON (SSBN 730) in 2013, leading his crew in conducting four strategic deterrent patrols vital to national security, earning HENRY M JACKSON the Commander, Pacific Fleet Retention Excellence Award.

Captain Moretty transitioned to the Acquisition Community in 2016, serving as the Executive Assistant to Director, Programming Division (OPNAV N80) on the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations, responsible for the development, submission, and defense of the USN/USMC annual investment program of $705 billion.

His acquisition related tours include Director, Mission Assurance, Advanced Undersea Systems (PMS 394) and Assistant Program Manager; Warfare Requirements, VIRGINIA Program (PMS 450).

He has earned numerous personal and service awards, but is most proud of the unit awards he shares with the outstanding crews he has served alongside. He is married to the former Jennifer Kaiser of Troutdale, Oregon and has two children, Tanner and Talia who both attended Oregon State University.
