Oct 27: Happy Navy Day!

What should we know about these important days?

USNL The Navy League sponsored the first national observance of Navy Day in 1922 to give recognition to the naval service.  The Navy League of New York proposed that the official observance be on 27 October in honor of President Theodore Roosevelt, who had been born on that day.  He was also instrumental in helping to found Navy League in 1902.

Navy Day was last officially observed on October 27th, 1949 when Louis Johnson directed that the U, S. Navy’s participation in such events would occur in May on the third Saturday, Armed Forces Day, he was the secretary of the newly created Department of Defense.

In 1972, Chief of Naval Operations, Admiral Elmo R. Zumwalt authorized recognition of 13 October 1775 as the Navy’s birthday.  In contrast to Navy Day, the Navy Birthday is intended as an internal activity for members of the active forces and reserves, as well as retirees, and dependents.

Navy League was not affected by this decision as it is Civilian Organization, and they continued to organize events as before.

Special note:

The Armed forces Festival held in Bremerton each year actually began before the national Armed Forces Day Parade, making it one of the oldest and continuously running Armed Forces Day Parades in the country.

Navy Fleet Weeks are held in many places around the country at different times during the year.  The one held in August in Seattle coincides with the annual SeaFair
