Mar 12: Luncheon Speaker Mary Ryan on Marine Mammal Program

March’s Luncheon Speaker is  Mary Ryan, Curator of the Naval Undersea Museum Keyport. She will be presenting the Navy’s Marine Mammal Program. The Navy’s highly-trained dolphins and sea lions carry out missions all over the world. With their natural acoustic, sight, and diving abilities, marine mammals are exceptionally skilled at finding objects underwater. Navy animals detect mines and intruders in a fraction of the time it takes human divers and human-made technology.

The Naval Undersea Museum is the official Navy museum that interprets all of the Navy’s undersea activities. They hold the country’s most comprehensive collection of U.S. Navy artifacts, documents, and reference material related to undersea subjects, and are renowned for their collections in torpedoes, mines, diving and salvage, submarine technology, and unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs).

Mary Ryan has been the curator at the U.S. Naval Undersea Museum in Keyport since 2010, where she leads the museum’s exhibit program, shapes the artifact collection, and connects the public to the museum’s rich subject matter. Mary has worked for fourteen years as a curator, interpretive planner, and exhibit developer creating exhibitions and interpretive plans for museums and historic sites across the country. She earned her Master’s Degree in History Museum Studies from the Cooperstown Graduate Program in Cooperstown, New York, and completed her undergraduate training in science and anthropology at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana.
